You show people playing poker or hacking into a computer; it feels so significant in the script, and then when you see it on the screen, it loses something. But there’s something about cooking – food being prepared is incredibly captivating. It became just a fun box of tools to use as a director.
Ice cream is the perfect buffer, because you can do things in a somewhat lighthearted way. Plus, people have an emotional response to ice cream; it’s more than just food. So I think when you combine caring, and eating wonderful food, it’s a very powerful combination.

My husband cooks fancier food for himself than I’ve ever cooked on-air. I call him from the road, and he’s making champagne-vanilla salmon or black-cherry pork chop. Half of me is feeling unworthy. Not only am I not a chef, I’m not a better cook than my own husband!
I’d always vaguely expected to outgrow my limitations. One day, I’d stop twisting my hair, and wearing running shoes all the time, and eating exactly the same food every day. The health of the planet is at stake, because the cruelty and the waste that accompanies the slaughter of billions of animals each year literally infects us all. We could consume healthy plant-based food produced at almost infinitely less cost. What does that say, really, about us and what we’re doing… to animals and to ourselves?
I try to eat food that hasn’t been washed in ammonia and then packaged in the shape of breaded dinosaurs filled with cheese – even though those are very tasty. I like to eat food that can actually make it through the 20-plus feet of my small intestine.

Then it’s Aretha Franklin, then it’s Lena Horne, then it’s Ella Fitzgerald, then it’s John Legend, then it’s Michael Jackson. Music, to me, is like food, so I feel like whatever I need that day, I can get from a song.
Nobody wants to be on food stamps, but when my family lost everything, we were grateful for it. I was grateful the program was there so I could concentrate on my schoolwork and not on my empty belly. We were grateful that we had the support we needed to roll up our sleeves and rebuild our lives.
When you listen to old-school music, you can smell your mother’s food in the kitchen. You can feel where you was when you first heard that song. That’s what’s beautiful about music. It’s for everyone, but we all have individual memories that make us love it.
There’s food and supplements that you can take legally that will better your body and help you stay healthy. Shortcuts are something that’s always been around all sports, but as a union, we’re trying to do the best we can to weed those guys out of the game.
The very fact that we are having a national conversation about what we should eat, that we are struggling with the question about what the best diet is, is symptomatic of how far we have strayed from the natural conditions that gave rise to our species, from the simple act of eating real, whole, fresh food.
When I started filming ‘2 Broke Girls,’ I actually was broke, so I was eating all the junk food they kept on set. But then I developed a skin rash that lasted over six months. The doctors said that it was due to stress, my diet, and lack of exercise.
