There have been a lot of people involved in the growth of EDM’s support in the U.S., from DJ/producers like David Guetta, Deadmau5 and Skrillex, to major festival organisers and pop artists of EDM integrating elements of dance music into their music.
I really like the idea of modesty. By the time I got into music, I was already wearing the scarf all the time, and it’s really personal to me, my Muslim beliefs, so I decided to keep it and find a way to work around it. I don’t see it as a restriction or limitation – I can still be me and get into music and be an entertainer.
Everything else – music, cinematography, costumes, design, acting – can be judged at face value. But when you’re looking at editing, you don’t know what the totality of the material was, and you don’t know the working dynamic between a director and an editor – whether the editor was micromanaged or given free rein. It’s very difficult.
When I started getting so many haters and closed doors, I decided to prove that it could be done. I was a divorced single mother of three at the time and a size 12 – not your typical model artist that labels feel work for the music industry.
Science is, rightly, searching for drugs to arrest ageing or to slow the advance of dementia. But the evidence suggests that many of the most powerful factors determining how you age come from what you do, and what you do with others: whether you work, whether you play music, whether you have regular visitors.
Life is a lot more interesting if you are interested in the people and the places around you. So, illuminate your little patch of ground, the people that you know, the things that you want to commemorate. Light them up with your art, with your music, with your writing, with whatever it is that you do.
When I have to score a film, I watch the movie first and then start thinking about it. And from that moment on, it is as if I were pregnant. I then have to deliver the child, so from that moment on, I think always about the music – even when I go to the grocery store, I think about it.
I love entertaining people, I love playing music, and I love rocking like an animal. But at a certain point, you’re playing gig after gig after gig, in town after town after town, and you’re lying down, staring at another hotel-room ceiling, and it’s like, ‘I want to be home. I’m a dad. I’ve got kids.’
What I’ve discovered is that in art, as in music, there’s a lot of truth-and then there’s a lie. The artist is essentially creating his work to make this lie a truth, but he slides it in amongst all the others. The tiny little lie is the moment I live for, my moment. It’s the moment that the audience falls in love.
While I’m here, I’m gonna milk it for all I can, so when I’m no longer hot – and I know that day is coming – I will step over here and enjoy everything I’ve created up to this point. The music is just opening all these doors, so I can relax.
God put me on this earth to bring souls back to the Kingdom of God. You don’t need to pray ten times a day – you just need hope. My music is going to stop war; it’s the healing music. I see myself in Brazil, in Syria, in Darfur, and places where they really need hope.
When I came into the music, I was forced to be a CEO. I was forced to be an entrepreneur; I was forced to… because I was looking for a deal. I didn’t have this grand scheme of starting a record company and then morphing into a clothing empire.
The thing about a music career is that it ain’t over until the fat lady sings. Look at all the times people threw in the towel on Dylan – or Neil Young. Remember when Young was doing things in the ‘80s like ’Trans’ and the rockabilly album and being completely lambasted by critics who now think he is wonderful again?
I’ve had an amazing life, but I think I was born with a little bit of sadness in me. I’ve always been attracted to those things, whether it’s sad movies, sad music… when you’re sad, you feel everything in a greater way than you do when you’re happy.
I first came across Langhorne Slim when I saw him play live, and he’s an incredibly infectious performer. The way he works the crowd is mind-blowing. You can listen to his music without really listening to his lyrics, but it pays off if you do.
I was pretty strict in high school about who I would listen to. Musicians like Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell… who were, in my opinion, great writers. The music mattered, but it held hands with the lyrics, and the personality was, overall, unsullied.
I’ve always dreamed of having an album. The problem is that it’s just very difficult to make an album nowadays because through technology, music shifts so fast, especially electronic music. Once you make five songs, the first one you did is already old and you wished you would have put it out right away. So that’s kind of the difficult part.
I realised that you can never legislate away from piracy. Laws can definitely help, but it doesn’t take away the problem. The only way to solve the problem was to create a service that was better than piracy and at the same time compensates the music industry – that gave us Spotify.
I think I made this decision that I just loved making music, and it didn’t matter what level I got to do it on, and ‘Fight Song’ was this declaration that I’m going to keep going, and I’m going to keep believing in myself, even if it seems like it’s impossible.
In ‘77 there was no Internet, there was no Twitter or Facebook, and I think that, without being some old git who hates anything new, people’s attention spans are too short. Back then you had ‘Top Of The Pops’ and ‘Melody Maker,’ and you had to make the effort to go to a show so that you absorbed the culture of music.
I think music, in my opinion, is not about motivation in the way it’s – it’s not a running base. It’s art. And my whole philosophy of music is different. It’s almost like cooking and serving to people, seeing them smile and enjoying the food, really.
A guitar can be so human, so sorrowful, so angry, and I wanted to figure out how to achieve that vibe without having to actually use guitars, because ‘Badlands’ is a very futuristic record – and making it that in an era of futuristic music is a really hard thing to do!
For me, fragrances are very – one of these beautiful art forms that bring about a whole host of things. It’s what you want to smell like, it’s memories that make you smile or are resonant of times in your life, it can remind you of music. If you’re a lover of scent, it’s a very kind of particular and evocative thing.
I’ve accepted the fact that Limp Bizkit is my band, one that I’m a part of, a band that I’ve built from the beginning. It does me no good to be in somebody else’s band playing their music, like Marilyn Manson or Korn. Being in Limp Bizkit allows me to be myself.
His belief in the power of music to convey ideas – not just entertain – has filtered down to musicians in every field, from alt-rock to hip-hop, from Bruce Springsteen and U2 to Arcade Fire and Kanye West. Popular music is different because of Johnny Cash.
