I like happy endings in movies. I think life has a happy ending. When it’s all said and done, it’s all something worthwhile, and I want my movies to reflect that. There are enough things to be sad about. When you pop in a movie, let the message be one that’s one of hope.
I feel like movies should stick to a genre and give the audience what they want, and then surprise them with the unexpected and not just do the same thing you’ve always seen. But of course, you’re gonna see some of the same things you’ve seen before. It’s part of the deal.
I did a few movies, but the word ‘star’… I cannot compare to a star like Clint Eastwood. I used to call Clint ‘Larry Dickman’ when he would come to my show; then, he started using the name when he would go under cover in a ‘Dirty Harry’ movie. That’s why he’s a movie star… he’s so creative.
There’s always room out there for the hand-drawn image. I personally like the imperfection of hand drawing as opposed to the slick look of computer animation. But you can do good stuff either way. The Pixar movies are amazing in what they do, but there’s plenty of independent animators who are doing really amazing things as well.
Talking about dreams is like talking about movies, since the cinema uses the language of dreams; years can pass in a second, and you can hop from one place to another. It’s a language made of image. And in the real cinema, every object and every light means something, as in a dream.
Streaming TV shows, movies, and other types of video over the Internet to all manner of devices, once a fringe habit, is now a squarely mainstream practice. Even people still paying for cable or satellite service often also have Netflix or Hulu accounts.
It would be nice to make a movie that other people want to make, because every one of these movies, I basically have to find the only company in the world that’s willing to make it, and it’s always a big challenge. I end up spending a tremendous amount of energy and time trying to get money to make these movies and it’s exhausting.
Our lives are pretty calm. Merging on the freeway in the closest you get to risking your life. So what’s missing now is that primal emotion of being scared to death, and I think that’s why people crave thrills like roller coasters or scary movies. They give you the chance to feel this very primal emotion in a very controlled environment.
In the movies, every crazy old fart needs a cool old car. Jack Nicholson drove a spiffy yellow 1970 Dodge Challenger two-door in ‘The Bucket List.’ In ‘Gran Torino,’ the cranky pensioner played by Clint Eastwood not only owned a 1972 GT Sport, he also used to build cars like that at the Ford plant.
I was a strange, dark little dude. I fell in love with horror movies, at a very early age. Somehow, as a first grader, I was able to convince my parents to let me go see stuff like ‘An American Werewolf in London’ in theaters, so I was headed in that direction anyway.
When I was in high school, there was ‘Superbad’ and ‘The Girl Next Door’ and ‘Wedding Crashers’ and all these great movies. You hope to be a part of something that’s smart, funny and in that Todd Phillips-vein. You want to make something like ‘Superbad.’ That movie was so good and so funny.
I used to love martial arts movies starring Bruce Lee and Jean Claude Van Damme. In one of Van Damme’s movies, he would break a pine tree. I would kick banana trees because I used to live on a farm. My father would get mad at me because I would break all of the banana trees around.
Hope and Crosby made seven ‘Road’ movies, starting in 1940 with ‘Road to Singapore.’ The movies were always about Crosby and Hope fleeing America and finding Dorothy Lamour in some exotic location. Bob’s character was cocky and cowardly; Bing’s character was smooth and unruffled. They were great characters – lousy, lovable guys.
Being sad and being depressed are two different things. Also, people going through depression don’t look so, while someone sad will look sad. The most common reaction is, ‘How can you be depressed? You have everything going for you. You are the supposed number one heroine and have a plush home, car, movies… What else do you want?’
Hollywood is a roulette wheel. Each project dictates what’s going to happen for you next, and it doesn’t really matter that your project is critically acclaimed or won awards or has fans worldwide. It’s a matter of how many movie tickets and DVDs and on-demand movies that you sell.
I wanted to escape Small Town U.S.A. To dismiss the boundaries, to explore. My life experience came from watching movies, TV, and reading books and magazines. When your culture comes from watching TV everyday, you’re bombarded with images of things that seem cool, places that seem interesting, people who have jobs and careers and opportunities.
Computers were never designed in the first place to become musical instruments. Within a computer, everything is sterile – there’s no sound, there’s no air. It’s totally code. Like with computer-generated effects in movies, you can create wonders. But it’s really hard to create emotion.
My dream role would probably be a psycho killer, because the whole thing I love about movies is that you get to do things you could never do in real life, and that would be my way of vicariously experiencing being a psycho killer. Also, it’s incredibly romantic.
I’ve made movies that I thought were good. I’ve made movies that I thought were okay, but then I was very good. And sometimes you’re in a movie and you think, I wish more people saw that – because you’re good. And it just works out that the movie gets lost. But that’s show business.
Because I was in the business of translating the ‘X-Men’ from the very successful comics, and taking the most popular book of the 20th century in ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and making it into three movies, I hope people realize I wouldn’t get involved in anything I didn’t think was really going to be worth their while.
I love Carpenter, I love Craven – these are all the classics – the Romeros of the world, but I think the biggest influence on me as a storyteller and as a filmmaker is actually Steven Spielberg. I love that even though Steven isn’t known for being a horror director, he started out his career making scary movies.
Critics can say what they like about the films, but very often, there’s a certain expectation of documentaries that they’re supposed to be like PowerPoint presentations. I see documentaries as movies. So when I see some critics writing that we could have done without the recreations altogether – well, perhaps.
We don’t make movies for critics. I’ve done four movies; there’s millions upon millions upon millions of people who’ve paid to see them. Somebody likes them. My greatest joy is to sit anonymously in a dark theater and watch it with an audience, a paying audience.
I grew up thinking that I would become a fighter pilot and was fascinated by aircrafts as I had grown up around that. But my father encouraged me to not become an Air Force person, given the varied interests I had, be it books, movies, sports or fighter flying.
With movies, you come and go as an actor, especially if you are not the lead, from week to week. You don’t really have a lot of time to get to know anyone, and then on to the next thing. I know a lot of actors who find fulfillment in playing an entirely new character. I like to stick with one character and create a family with the people around me.
