I want to challenge myself to see where my limit is and experiment with a lot of different films. A lot of artists from Asia focus too much on their Asian background. I don’t want to let go of my background, but to be a success in the U.S., which is my goal, I realize I need to surround myself with American filmmakers and producers.
I didn’t even know I could sing or write songs. I didn’t have that education. But people shouldn’t think they can look down on someone like me, because I’ve had the same success as others, sold the same amount of records, if not more. They shouldn’t think that because I’m just from ‘The X Factor,’ I’m not credible or respected as much.
You’ve got to eat while you dream. You’ve got to deliver on short-range commitments, while you develop a long-range strategy and vision and implement it. The success of doing both. Walking and chewing gum if you will. Getting it done in the short-range, and delivering a long-range plan, and executing on that.
In the past, my success has come with sticking to one plan. That usually works. Obviously it’s going to falter, and I’m going to go into slumps here and there, but stick with the plan, and hopefully it will come out successful more times than not.
With success comes responsibility of playing your part, to do what you can to help not only those that helped you get to where you’re at, but the future of who’s going to be playing a part of your business and everything you do in your entire career.
The owner or president is the person who controls the club. The coach’s job is to keep him happy. But the key to success, as a manager, is your relationship with the players. Important clubs and important players succeed when the environment is correct. The players must enjoy their work and feel free to express their talents.
I think the idea that you know who your inner self is on a daily basis, because… you know. What’s good for you 25 years ago may not be good for you now. So, to keep in touch with that, I think that’s the first ingredient for success. Because if you’re a successful human being, everything else is gravy, I think.

When ‘Pizza’ released, I was a nobody. Initially, we managed to get only 100 screens. But, after its success, the producers of ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’ got 150 screens and also released the film in the U.S. Now, distributors are keen to invest in my films because they feel I have face value.
I think it is going to be very difficult to be a company in silos. I think the game has changed. We won’t define our success by looking at the competitors but at how satisfied are our customers, how engaged are our internal stakeholders, and how good is our product pipeline.
