My dad read, I think, the Perry Mason mysteries and Zane Grey and some humor compendiums… And then at one point, the bookmobile started coming to town. That was really cool. I mean, that was when I read my first Raymond Carver story. I think that was probably 1969 or so. I must have been 13.
I would like to fly in space. Absolutely. That would be cool. I used to just do personally risky things, but now I’ve got kids and responsibilities, so I can’t be my own test pilot. That wouldn’t be a good idea. But I definitely want to fly as soon as it’s a sensible thing to do.
Honestly, I’m cool with everyone, and people pick up on that. I’d say, ‘I’m not gay, but it’s all good.’ It’s kind of like going to Paris when you don’t know the language; some Americans get into trouble over there, but I’m just like, ‘Sorry, I don’t speak French.’
I think there is some truth to the fact that yeah, okay, cool, obviously the more mainstream kind of easier-to-grasp-onto dance music has become popular, but that holds true with almost any genre. It wasn’t like the Sex Pistols hit the radio. It was poppier versions of that is what hit. It’s never, like, the true core stuff.
I find it really funny that men can always get away with being a ladies man. Everyone thinks it’s really cool. But a girl can’t really date boys all the time because everybody looks down on her. I think boys get away with things so much easier.
So when I got to be about 13 or 14, I started listening – even though my parents music was way cool – to contemporary hard rock at that time, which was Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Ted Nugent and all that, and that’s just where I came from.
There’s no way to play it cool when you meet Paul McCartney. You just start sweating; you trip over your words. Everyone kind of reverts back to being a 10-year-old girl. You can’t help it. He’s one of the only people on planet Earth that everyone knows who he is. Everyone.
I don’t really know too many designers. I like a lot of what Kanye West has done with Yeezy, but I think it’s a bit too, how you say, elevated; it’s a little bit too special. Like he’s trying to make something that’s kind of a little bit too cool sometimes.
I have this desire to just while away weeks, months and years. It took me two years to make this record but that was with me trying to condense my process and not disappear down the rabbit hole with all the cool things I’ve collected. I could take 10 years and not explore everything I want to with these instruments.
Don’t get me wrong, magic is cool. But a nervous mother singing to her child at night while something moves quietly through the dark outside her house? That’s a story. Handled properly, it’s more dramatic than any apocalypse or goblin army could ever be.
When I hit 16, I got a scooter to ride to school. It was bright pink, and I saw on the ownership papers that Jonathan Ross once owned it. My friends slated me for it because of the colour, but it was cool. My father used to ride, and my mother’s boyfriend has a bike, so we’re a bit of a biker family.
I’m way better in person than I am on things like Twitter. I know Twitter is the best and fastest way to connect with fans who really appreciate you but I’m still not cool with it – although I am trying! I try my best but I’m a one-on-one person and I don’t want to tell people I’m on the toilet or I just brushed my teeth.
At Berkeley, you wore a hoodie and pajamas and Birkenstocks, and that’s swag. I was so thrown off. What I thought was cool wasn’t cool no more, so I thought about what I actually liked. I started experimenting. I started wearing Birkenstocks. I wanted to dive into the culture.
I think my parents were surprisingly cool with me entering the arts. Although, I think they thought it was going to be a phase, and they didn’t expect me to actually stick with it, and rightfully so. They were concerned whether I could afford groceries, being an actor.
A friend of mine has a big farm in the desert, and she picks up feathers and roadkill for me, then makes it into clothes. I think it’s cool to wear roadkill. If I died and somebody wanted to wear my teeth around their neck to VMAs, I’d feel honored.
Coming up, the music of my era was very conscious. I grew up on Public Enemy, and it was popular culture to be aware. People were wearing Malcolm X T-shirts and Malcolm X hats. It was a very cool thing to know who Malcolm X was. It was all in the lyrics. It was trendy to be conscious and aware.
When I first started making music, I was all about wordplay and how fast I could rap, but over the years, I’ve really gained an appreciation for melody. What’s cool is that when you’re singing, you have to be concise, and when you’re rapping, you have the opportunity to be really detailed with your lyrics.
I did a show with Tori Kelly, and it was really cool that I got to meet her. She has always been a huge inspiration of mine, and I’m obsessed with her voice, so it was great to get to talk to her about the industry. The best advice she gave me was to just be myself.
I try to explain to people that you get the roles that are right when they’re right. If you have a nerd character but you’re kind of a cool guy, you’re probably not going to get the nerd part. The nerd is going to get the nerd part. You know, someone like me.
Avicii’s melodies were so simple and cool, and they were actually similar to the melodies I played on piano. I thought if I could teach myself how to produce and get those melodies out of my head and into the computer, maybe I could make some cool music, too.
When I signed my contract to be in ‘Grease 2,’ my agent said, ‘Well, she’s going to have a number.’ So I did! They wrote me a number where I was teaching Maxwell Caulfield how to be cool. It was called ‘Cool Rider.’ And it ain’t in the movie.
Lauryn Hill’s always been a hero of mine. And Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae and Adele, those are the current artists I would reference in terms of who’s been able to do really amazing pop records with really cool, organic throwback elements of soul in there as well.
It wasn’t cool that I didn’t comb my hair and had books and wore glasses. It was never cool be a nerd and tomboy, and these days, it really is. And I’m like, ‘You guys have no idea what I went through.’ How many times my mother yelled at me to comb my hair.
I was in art school, and we had all these random classes. We’d listen to a lot of Bollywood. I’d listen to Spanish music – and I don’t even speak Spanish, but Hector Lavoe is amazing – we listened to French music like Edith Piaf. She’s tight. I like cool vocal inflections; I like cool sounds. I pretty much listen to anything I think is good.
Whenever I have a job, it’s very important for me to handle myself in a way so that when there’s another person, a young person of color, or even someone who’s my age now, that they’ll say, ‘Oh, Dule was cool. Yeah, he handled his business. Yeah, he really added to what we did here,’ so maybe we’ll do it again.
