My dad read, I think, the Perry Mason mysteries and Zane Grey and some humor compendiums… And then at one point, the bookmobile started coming to town. That was really cool. I mean, that was when I read my first Raymond Carver story. I think that was probably 1969 or so. I must have been 13.
I would like to fly in space. Absolutely. That would be cool. I used to just do personally risky things, but now I’ve got kids and responsibilities, so I can’t be my own test pilot. That wouldn’t be a good idea. But I definitely want to fly as soon as it’s a sensible thing to do.

Coming up, the music of my era was very conscious. I grew up on Public Enemy, and it was popular culture to be aware. People were wearing Malcolm X T-shirts and Malcolm X hats. It was a very cool thing to know who Malcolm X was. It was all in the lyrics. It was trendy to be conscious and aware.
When I first started making music, I was all about wordplay and how fast I could rap, but over the years, I’ve really gained an appreciation for melody. What’s cool is that when you’re singing, you have to be concise, and when you’re rapping, you have the opportunity to be really detailed with your lyrics.
I did a show with Tori Kelly, and it was really cool that I got to meet her. She has always been a huge inspiration of mine, and I’m obsessed with her voice, so it was great to get to talk to her about the industry. The best advice she gave me was to just be myself.

Whenever I have a job, it’s very important for me to handle myself in a way so that when there’s another person, a young person of color, or even someone who’s my age now, that they’ll say, ‘Oh, Dule was cool. Yeah, he handled his business. Yeah, he really added to what we did here,’ so maybe we’ll do it again.
