We celebrated Christmas. Not religiously, but we did the tree and the lights. Hannukah always seemed not quite as thrilling – Sorry to my Jewish brothers and sisters! But when you’re a kid, Santa and all that, you know, that really trumps the menorah. So we did Christmas.
The desire to look strong and decisive, instead of looking human, is the fatal flaw of so many politicians, and I will never understand why the favoured path of the political class is akin to a child with chocolate smeared on their face insisting that they didn’t eat the edible Christmas tree ornaments while their parents slept.
For more than a decade, I led an organization that put on an elaborate Christmas program each December. It was a big production, with over 250 people participating in more than 20 performances. By the end of the season, everyone who participated was exhausted.
Christmas Day we get all the dogs and the cats and make breakfast and open presents and then go to the backyard – because it is always like 100 degrees in L.A. – and we get a speaker and play fun ‘80s music and dance outside with all the animals.

I’m not a fan of musicals at all, but I do think ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ is a very good. I always thought ‘Walk the Line’ was very good, too. I was in ‘Nowhere Boy.’ I played Paul McCartney. That was kind of musical – we did songs in that.

I think we’ve taken the meaning of Christmas out. People don’t stop and think about Jesus or the birth of Jesus. When they think of Christmas, they think of Santa Claus and – for the children, and they think of giving gifts and out-giving the next person of spending their time looking for the right thing for somebody who has everything.
