We all want recognition and validation to an extent for our art, but greatness as a trade for decency is a risky proposition. In my life, I try to leave the people I encounter with the feeling that they have been respected and treated with warmth and appreciation.
When I was making my debut as an artist, I felt that it was very important that I try to combine the background of my own culture, my people, and the country into the contemporary art world. So that’s how I came up with the term ‘superflat.’

I played football for a long time when I was a kid, and then I went to art college and turned my back on it. Because of that, my toes are mangled; they’ve been broken. They’re like hooves or talons. They’re disgusting. I’d never get them out.

Take a martial art or a sport, something that gives you a skill, engages the body, and allows you the possibility of being great – or at least being active. You’ll find your confidence. Without it, you’re nothing. It’s the remedy for everything.
The old, sad art colors are gone. Now I paint bright colors. I paint paintings which are happy, where children are laughing and playing with animals. I paint paradise on Earth. I still paint sadness sometimes, but there is sadness in the world, too.
